The Mercury’s 35-point win is the third-largest in franchise history and was Phoenix’s first time winning a game by more than 30 points since 2017, when they won over the Dallas Wings by 42 points.

Thomas has the most triple-doubles in WNBA history with 19, including playoffs, and accounts for 37.2 percent of those. She finished the game with 18 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists in the Mercury’s victory over the Fever.

Guard Kahleah Copper huddled around Thomas and chanted, “MVP,” as the fans in the sellout crowd of 17,071 in attendance erupted with loud cheers.

Just two years ago, fans at PHX Arena witnessed franchise legend Diana Taurasi become the first player in WNBA history to score 10,000 career points. Now, Thomas has taken up the mantle of making history in front of those same fans.

Thomas Has Been Overlooked Her Entire Career

When asked about recording her third consecutive triple-double, Thomas expressed gratitude for being a part of the Mercury after spending a decade as a member of the Connecticut Sun. Before her arrival, Phoenix had just one player who recorded a triple-double—Sug Sutton in 2023.

“I’m just doing me, this is what I’ve done my whole entire career,” Thomas said. “Super grateful for my teammates tonight and allowing me to go after that. Butt, yeah, I’m just super happy to be here. Super grateful for all the support, the fan base, and we’re just going to continue to do us.”

Forward DeWanna Bonner had one of her best games of the season against the Fever, finishing the game with 23 points and seven rebounds for the Mercury. She joined Phoenix midseason after spending the first month with Indiana, where she appeared in 10 games.

When it comes to the importance of Thomas’ leadership, Bonner told Ballislife that it is crucial for Mercury’s success to compete on both ends of the court. She also said that she hopes Thomas “continues to get the same love and support, because she deserves it.”

“Every single day, whether it’s practice, whether it’s media, whether it’s a game, she leads,” Bonner said. “She’s always the first one at the gym, she’s always one of the last ones to leave. She takes care of her body, she works really, really hard, so it just motivate everybody else, like, ‘okay, we got to be on our s*** too.’ We got to do the same, and she sets the standard for our team, and we try to follow.

“We are just grateful to have her on our side. She plays both sides of the ball every single day. As you see, she was running the point guard today and still getting assists and getting everybody in the right spot. So just a credit to her, and it’s good to be on this side of the basketball with her.”

Alyssa Thomas Makes WNBA History!

In the fourth quarter, Thomas was three assists away from recording her third consecutive triple-double while the Mercury were up by over 25 points. Head coach Nate Tibbetts faced a decision  whether to keep Thomas in the game or bench her for the remainder of the game.

Thomas stayed in the game and notched the triple-double after a pass to Bonner, who drilled a three-pointer, giving her a third consecutive triple-double and making history in front of the Mercury faithful.

“It’s a tough decision by me,” Tibbetts said. “Do you leave her in? Do you not? I don’t know what the right answer is. Obviously, a pretty cool experience for her to do all the things that she’s done and not get to that level (recording a third consecutive triple-double). I told her she had one, maybe two possessions. Everyone else, be ready to shoot because I don’t think you want to mess with the game, but also I think she deserved that opportunity. I’m just glad that we got a good look and we knocked it down.”

Holding the fourth seed with a 19-11 record, the Mercury have matched their win total from last season and are one win away from having the most wins in the regular-season since 2018.

Thomas has been a difference-maker for the Mercury on both ends of the court, despite missing five games in early June. Now back and healthy, she’s a leading candidate for the Most Valuable Player award alongside Minnesota Lynx’s Napheesa Collier.

The Phoenix Mercury will continue their four-game homestand as they face the Atlanta Dream on Sunday.
