Wednesday’s ATP Tour and WTA Results and Previews from Toronto and Montreal

Wednesday’s schedule at the National Bank Open in Toronto, Canada will feature No. 2 seed Taylor Fritz vying for a spot in the finals of another Masters 1000.

Fritz, who is currently ranked No. 4 in the world, will face fellow American Ben Shelton in the day’s second match. Fritz owns a 1-0 head-to-head lead over Shelton and recently defeated defending finalist Andrey Rublev 6-3, 7-6(4) in the quarterfinals.

Shelton, who has thrilled the fans with his high-octane game throughout the week, dismissed recent Washington, D.C. winner Alex de Minaur 6-3 6-4 on Tuesday evening. Shelton hit 11 aces during the one hour and 11 minute encounter against his Australian opponent.

The day’s first match will feature top seed Alexander Zverev taking on No. 11 seed and three-time finalist Karen Khachanov for the eighth time.

Leading his Russian opponent 5-2 in head-to-head matches, Zverev will be looking to reach his fourth final of the season.

Zverev defeated defending champion Alexi Popyrin in the quarterfinals, and Khachanov took out Alex Michelsen from the United States.

Osaka and Mboko Featured in Montreal Semifinals

Finding her form just in time for this month’s US Open, Japanese star Naomi Osaka returns to semifinal action in Montreal on Wednesday to face Clara Tauson from Denmark.

Defeating No. 10 seed Elina Svitolina in easy fashion on Tuesday evening, Osaka will look to reverse a retirement loss to Tauson earlier this year in Auckland, New Zealand.

Playing her opponent in the finals, Osaka had to retire with a back injury after winning the first set 6-4.

Tauson has had a great tournament to date, defeating Wimbledon winner Iga Swiatek in the fourth round, and Australian Open winner Madison Keys in the quarterfinals.

The day’s second semifinal will feature Canadian favourite Victoria Mboko going up against No. 9 seed Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan.

The pair played for the first time last week in Washington, D.C., a match that Rybakina won 6-3, 7-5.

Mboko has had a tournament to remember in Montreal, defeating Grand Slam winners Coco Gauff and Sofia Kenin along the way to the semifinals, losing only one set in the process.

Rybakina, who is known as one of the hardest hitters on Tour, has had an easier path to the semifinals and has also lost only one set. The 26-year-old advanced to the final four when her opponent Marta Kostyuk retired in the quarterfinals trailing 6-1, 2-1.
