Sunderland will reportedly be forced to pay Chelsea a penalty fee if Marc Guiu fails to make a certain number of appearances next season.
The 19-year-old is on the verge of completing a loan move to Regis Le Bris’ side and he is expected to challenge Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda for a starting berth at the Stadium of Light.
Ipswich Town were interested in signing the Spaniard during the early weeks of the summer transfer window, following Liam Delap’s move to Chelsea for €35.5 million, however Sunderland have won the race for his signature.
Marc Guiu to join Sunderland
Guiu’s temporary move to the Stadium of Light is expected to be formally announced shortly, although the newly-promoted side will be punished if he fails to establish himself as a regular at the club.
That is according to The Athletic, who claim that Chelsea have inserted a clause into the loan deal, whereby Sunderland will be forced to pay a penalty fee if Guiu doesn’t play a certain number of games.
Le Bris’ side are reportedly comfortable with this clause and don’t view it as problematic.
Guiu is expected to travel to Sunderland to formally complete his move to the club, although his flight to the north-east of England was recently postponed due to an unspecified reason, as per Sky Sports.
However, he is still set to become Sunderland’s ninth signing of the summer transfer window, following the arrivals of Habib Diarra, Simon Adingra, Enzo Le Fee, Chemsdine Talbi, Noah Sadiki, Granit Xhaka, Robin Roefs and Reinildo Mandava.
