Monday’s ATP Tour and WTA Results and Previews from Toronto and Montreal
Monday’s action at the National Bank Open in Toronto, Canada will be highlighted by No. 1 Alexander Zverev taking on defending champion Alexi Popryin, and former semifinalist Karen Khachanov going up against No. 26 seed Alex Michelsen.
Zverev owns a 3-0 head-to-head series lead over Popryin, and has never lost a set to the Australian. Zverev will be looking to get his season together after disappointing results following his finals appearance at the Australian Open in January.
Popryin enters the contest with Zverev with wins over Daniil Medvedev and Holger Rune.
Michelsen will be looking to make his first-ever Masters 1000 semifinal (after reaching his first quarterfinal), and Khachanov will be eager to reach his third semifinal in Canada.
On Sunday evening, the Toronto fans witnessed four-straight three set matches throughout the day.
Alex de Minuar defeated Francios Tiafoe 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, defending finalist Andrey Rublev received a retirement victory over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-7(3), 7-6(2), 3-0, Ben Shelton prevailed in an entertaining encounter over Flavio Cobolli 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(1), and No. 2 seed Taylor Fritz also needed a third set tiebreaker to oust No. 19 seed Jiri Lehecka 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 7-6(5).
Fritz will face Rublev next, and de Minuar will take on Shelton on Tuesday.
Mboko Looks to Reach Semifinals
Canadian upstart Victoria Mboko will look to reach her maiden Masters 1000 semifinal on Monday in Montreal, facing Jessica Bouzas Maneiro from Spain.
Defeating top seed Coco Gauff in the fourth round, Mboko will move up to No. 55 in the world when the latest rankings are released. The 18-year-old has been the talk of the tennis world this week on Tour.
Bouzas Maneiro ousted Zhu Lin in three sets on Saturday night.
The day’s second quarterfinal will see former Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina taking on Marta Kostyuk.
Rybakina dispatched No. 30 seed Dayana Yastremska in the fourth round, and Kostyuk reached the quarterfinals by defeating Marketa Vondrousova, No. 15 seed Daria Kasatkina, and No. 28 seed McCartney Kessler.
Rybakina currently leads her head-to-head with Kostyuk at 2-1.
On Sunday evening, reigning Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek was ousted in straight sets by No. 16 seed Clara Tauson from Denmark 7-6(1), 6-3.
