Lynx’s 53-Point Road Win Sets New WNBA Record

Earlier this week, the Lynx picked up a victory over the defending champion New York Liberty in a 2024 WNBA Finals rematch. On Saturday, the Lynx defeated the Aces 111–58, a 53-point margin. With the win, Minnesota surpassed the previous record held by the 1998 Houston Comets, who won the championship that year against the Phoenix Mercury.

On August 18, 2017, the Lynx set the largest margin of victory of 59 points over the Indiana Fever with a final score of 111-52. Hall of Famer Sylvia Fowles led Minnesota with 25 points while shooting 9-for-12 from the field and six rebounds. That year, the team won the WNBA championship in five games over its rival, the Los Angeles Sparks.

When asked about the similarities between the 2017 and 2025 Minnesota Lynx teams, head coach Cheryl Reeve said she sees some differences

“It’s just so different,” Reeve told Ballislife postgame. “The way the style of play—we’re so far from the style played at that group played. I think the common thread is just their chemistry and they’re being around each other…and their ability to problem solve and never really get broken. You might be scoping every break. That’s probably common.”

Kayla McBride Goes 8-for-8 from Three in Historic WNBA Performance

Throughout the first half, the Lynx dominated from the 3-point line, making 13 out of 14 attempts and having a 3-point percentage of 93, best in league history. Minnesota also set the franchise record for most made threes in a single game with 17, which set the tone in the team’s dominant win.

Guard Kayla McBride started the game off by making four 3-pointers and scoring 12 points against her former team, the Las Vegas Aces., which was a season high in first quarter. She was a part of the organization from when they were the San Antonio Stars before moving to Las Vegas in 2018. Drafted No. 3 overall by San Antonio in 2014, McBride was a member of the franchise from 2014 to 2020.

McBride had a perfect percentage from the 3-point line, going 8-for-8 in the first half, which is the most without any misses in WNBA history. She finished the game with an impressive stat line of 24 points, two rebounds, five assists, and three steals.

“To make eight threes (with) 100% shooting in a half, that’s what the record is,” Reeve told Ballislife. “When we were practicing yesterday in Minneapolis, K-Mac (Kayla McBride) was the same. She made everything and so she’s wearing a little something on her thumb because she got hurt in a recent game. She says that’s helped her keep some things out of the way, so she feels like she’s a better shooter right now. So I’m happy about that. Kudos to the trainer. Didn’t know that we were going to have multiple benefits from his work. But K-Mac was active, K-Mac was open, (and) K-Mac cashed in.”

Earlier in the season, McBride took some time away from the Lynx after having a busy offseason playing for Laces BC in Unrivaled’s inaugural season, followed by Fenerbahce in Turkey. Since her return, she made an immediate impact for the best team in the league while Minnesota looks to strive for its fifth championship in franchise history.

A lot of fun,” Minnesota Lynx forward Jessica Shepard said. “I mean, we saw it yesterday in practice. Actually, she dropped at least 40 in practice. So it was not a surprise today. And just super happy for (Kayla McBride). Ever since the All-Stars, she’s been playing unbelievable basketball for us, and it’s been helping us out a lot as a team.”

Jessica Shepard Delivers off the Bench

Shepard made an impact off the bench for the Lynx, posting a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds and having a plus/minus of +46. She joined Minnesota alums Plenette Pierson, Sylvia Fowles, and Maya Moore to have the highest efficiency in a game in WNBA history.

After missing the 2024 WNBA season, Shepard is back and fully healthy for the 2025 season. In fact, McBride expressed the impact Shepard has brought to the Lynx this season.

Jess is a hooper and she does it with a very quiet demeanor, but she’s just a great basketball player,” McBride said. “She does a lot of different things, rebounding, assists. She feels the game at a very, very high level, and that was something that I already knew about, just from the first moment.

Napheesa Collier exits Saturday’s game with an ankle injury

Lynx forward and MVP front runner Napheesa Collier left Saturday’s game due to a right ankle injury that occurred before the end of the third quarter, in which the team had a 43-point lead. She contributed to Minnesota’s win with 18 points, three rebounds, five assists, and two steals while playing 26 minutes of action.

I didn’t think the game was over,” Reeve said. “I don’t think like that. She had a sub; she was going to sit out the fourth quarter. Sometimes these things happen.”

Throughout this season, Collier has put up impressive numbers  Minnesota Lynx, averaging 23.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.8 steals.  She picked up where she left off in the 2024 postseason, a historic run for the team that ultimately fell to the New York Liberty in five games.

Last season, Collier was the runner-up for the MVP award, which was awarded to Las Vegas Aces forward A’ja Wilson. She was additionally named the WNBA’s Defensive Player of the Year, and was named to the All-WNBA First Team.

“Yeah, it’s tough,” McBride said. “I thought we put a great 40 minutes together. Obviously, you hate seeing anybody go down, but especially your MVP. And we just wish the best for it, we just wanted her to be healthy. And the really cool thing about this group is that we care about each other as people first. So, when we see Phee (Napheesa Collier) go down, it’s like, we care about Phee the person before the basketball player.”

So just wish the best for her, like speed recovery. Just wanted to be healthy. She’s had such an amazing season, and she’s just so impactful for us on both ends of the floor. But more than anything, I just want Phee, the human being, to be okay, and just all love on her, that’s all we can do.

The Minnesota Lynx will face the Seattle Storm on the road on Tuesday.
