The Division II school based in Honolulu’s participation was confirmed on Tuesday with the release of the 2025 Maui Invitational bracket. The event is commonly accepted as one of the premier events on the early men’s college basketball slate and will return for its 42nd season at its usual home of Lahaina Civic Center on Nov. 24-26. All games will be broadcast on the ESPN family of networks.
The Silverswords will face Washington State in the third of four first-round showdowns, which will open with a clash between North Carolina State and Seton Hall. Boise State faces the University of Southern California in part two, while the slate closes with Texas, the lone 2025 NCAA Tournament of the bunch, against Arizona State.
“The 2025 Southwest Maui Invitational features yet another competitive field and includes three teams making their Tournament debut and two previous Tournament champions,” tournament chairman and three-time ACC Coach of the Year Dave Odom said in a statement. “There’s truly nothing like the energy and atmosphere that fills the Lahaina Civic Center each November, and we are excited for each of these programs to add to this iconic Tournament’s history as they look to deliver Maui Magic for college basketball fans on-island and at-large.”
Chaminade’s participation is sometimes seen as the highlight of the event: well-known for its legendary 1982 upset of then-No. 1 Virginia, Chaminade has routinely sought to duplicate that magic against the nation’s elite at the Maui Invitational. Under recent adjustments to the format, the Silverswords now compete in odd-numbered editions and will face a Cougar group going into its second season under head coach David Riley.
Chaminade has earned eight wins in the Maui Invitational, which includes an 86-73 win over 2025 participant Texas in 2012. Other Silversword victims include Providence, Stanford, Villanova, Oklahoma, and California, the last coming during their final showing as annual participants eight years prior.

Beyond Chaminade’s return, the Longhorns stand as one of the most prominent storylines: Texas goes into this season with former Xavier boss Sean Miller at the helm after Rodney Terry’s release following a disappointing SEC debut. The Longhorns snuck into the NCAA Tournament at 19-15 before falling in the First Four to Miller’s Musketeers. Texas is back in the Maui Invitational for the first time since winning it all in 2020, when the event was moved to Asheville, NC amidst COVID-19 precautions.
Other slots on the bracket feature power conference schools seeking redemption: Seton Hall, fresh off a seven-win season in Shaheen Holloway’s third tour, open things up against NC State, which brought in McNeese mastermind Will Wade after a disappointing follow-up to a 2024 Final Four showing.
Rounding out the field are the Broncos and Trojans, the former looking to bone up against power competition after standing as one of the first four left out of the NCAA Tournament after falling in the Mountain West title game.
