49ers rumors: Will Trent Williams situation force Round 1 OT pick? Insider says not so fast

The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for the NFL Draft. With several mock drafts predicting the Niners taking an offensive tackle, two insiders disagree with the take and believe the 49ers will go in another direction, according to Nick Wagoner and Matt Miller of ESPN.

“In reading the tea leaves and talking to people around the league, the 49ers don’t necessarily view offensive tackle as a Round 1 priority. Instead, they have been heavily connected to wide receivers by teams when running through mock draft exercises. KC Concepcion (Texas A&M) is a name to watch,” Miller wrote.

The 49ers and Williams have been in talks to work out a deal. So far, there has not been a deal. It does not look like the Niners will trade Williams in the offseason and will attempt to keep their veteran star tackle. Yet, there could still be a scenario where they find a replacement. While the Niners could seek a replacement, Wagoner discussed why they won’t.

“Williams will be 38 in July, and the Niners don’t have an obvious long-term replacement on the roster. Selecting a tackle in the first few rounds is a possibility if there’s one with starter potential available. It’s worth noting the Niners have drafted only one offensive tackle in the first round since Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch took over in 2017,” Wagoner wrote.

The Niners ranked 16th in run blocking last season. Yet, they were in the bottom 10 in pass protection, leading many to believe they need to find a replacement for Williams. With the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams building formidable defenses, the Niners will have decisions to make on Draft Day.
