The WNBA’s 2026 season delivered everything basketball fans could ask for: shocking upsets, breakout stars, overtime thrillers, and the emergence of a new powerhouse. As the 2026 playoffs unfolded, the league’s biggest names shared the spotlight with rising contenders, creating one of the most memorable postseasons in recent memory.
An expansion franchise stormed to a Cinderella run, the defending champions crashed out early, and the 2026 WNBA Playoffs have produced unforgettable moments so far with perhaps a few more to come. Here are the biggest ones with just a few games remaining.
The Liberty Pull Off the Unthinkable
No moment shook the WNBA landscape more than the eighth-seeded New York Liberty sweeping the No. 1-seeded Minnesota Lynx in the first round. The Liberty entered the postseason with a 26-18 record and faced a Minnesota team that finished atop the standings at 33-11. Yet New York dominated both games, winning 91-75 and 87-71 to complete a historical upset. New York is the first eight seed to beat a one seed in WNBA history.
What made the achievement even more stunning was how decisive the victories were. There was no dramatic Game 3 and no last-second miracle. The Liberty simply outplayed the league’s top regular-season team from start to finish.
A lot of this attributes to the mismatches in the paint and how New York had Minnesota’s number even in the regular season. Breanna Stewart put New York on her back with a 34- point performance in Game 1 while shooting 11-of-18, and 21 points in Game 2.

Arike Ogunbowale 40-Point Master Class
With the way every team offensively struggled against the Golden State Valkyries leading up to the finals, there was one player who carved up their defense. Arike Ogunbowale did the unthinkable in Game 2 against Golden State, posting 40 points. She nearly spearheaded a stunning upset for the Dallas Wings, knocking down a miraculous last-second shot to send Game 2 into overtime and keep the series alive. Even in the third game of the series, Ogunbowale came to play.
Their first round series was so much fun because of all the craziness. Many expected the Wings to get swept easily, but they were not backing down without a fight. For two nights, Ogunbowale reminded everyone why she’s still one of the most dangerous shot-makers in basketball. The Wings’ playoff run may have ended early, but her 40-point explosion and 30-point performance in Game 3 will be remembered. Her performances gave us a flashback to her Notre Dame years, where buzzer-beating shots helped the Fighting Irish win a NCAA title.
Aces, Fever: Brewing Rivalry
Nobody expected these two teams to meet in the first round of the playoffs, and honestly it’s unfortunate this series was only three games. I think we can all agree this series should have been seven games. This new brewing rivalry dates back to last year where the Fever had the Aces number in the regular season. They also took last season’s semifinals to a Game 5 with a severely injured team.
There is also the respect that comes from each side, where Aces coach Becky Hammon had said previously it’s hard to keep up because:
“They [Indiana] are a three-headed monster, in Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston, and Kelsey Mitchell.”
Which for a team like Las Vegas, they have their own trio: Jackie Young, Chelsea Gray, and A’ja Wilson have produced so many great playoff moments in recent years but came up a bit short in the semifinals.
In Game 1 of the series, the Aces trio dominated. Wilson with 38 points, Young with 21, and Gray with 14 in a 102-85 victory over the Fever. However, Game 2 was a much different story, as Indiana’s trio knew it was a win or go home situation. In a 99-89 victory, Clark finished the game with 27, even though she did foul out, Mitchell with 26, and Boston with 22. The Fever’s victory was short-lived, as the Aces responded by winning Game 3 and taking the series.
It’ll be exciting to see these teams face off in the future. Will both team’s core remain intact.
Atlanta Dream Reach WNBA Finals
After years of rebuilding, the Atlanta Dream reminded everyone they belonged among the WNBA’s contenders. Their biggest move being acquiring Angel Reese from the Chicago Sky.
It’s been quite a move for A.R. and the franchise, so far, as it is now two victories away from a WNBA title.
Atlanta swept the Washington Mystics in the opening round before delivering one of the most impressive semifinal performances of recent memory. The Dream defeated the New York Liberty in three straight games, including a thrilling 101-98 overtime victory in Game 2 and an 85-83 nail-biter in Game 3. Reese and Jordin Canada were the main focus for the Liberty series, as they continued to make clutch shots or plays to keep the “Dream” alive.

The Valkyries Take The Playoffs By Storm
If Golden State’s first-round victory announced their arrival, the semifinals cemented their legitimacy.
Facing a battle-tested Las Vegas squad, the Valkyries completed a stunning 3-0 sweep. The signature moment came in Game 3, when Golden State outlasted the Aces 87-77 in overtime to clinch a Finals berth. Not only did it take down the defending champions, but head coach Natalie Nakase got the upper-hand on her former mentor, Becky Hammon. Nakase proved her Coach of the Year campaign was no fluke, having game-plans for the Wings and Aces.
Knocking off a championship-caliber team led by Wilson instantly elevated the Valkyries from feel-good story to genuine title contender.
The Playoffs That Changed the Conversation
The 2026 WNBA Playoffs have been defined by the unexpected. An eighth seed eliminated the No. 1 seed. A second-year franchise reached the Finals. Established stars continued to build their legacies while emerging talents seized the spotlight.
Most importantly, the postseason reminded fans why playoff basketball remains unmatched. Every possession matters. Every game felt bigger. And every round delivered moments that will be remembered long after a champion is crowned.
If this postseason is any indication, the future of the WNBA has never been brighter.
